Pet-ification: How We Give AI Toys an Emotion System and a Growth System

First, let us be clear about who we are. Nablai (Shenzhen Nablai Intelligent Technology Co., Ltd.) is an AI company whose focus today is AI smart toys, and our product is the AI smart toy module. Our customers are toy companies and contract manufacturers: they drop our module into plush toys, IP figures and educational hardware, and it becomes an AI toy. Building on three main control platforms - Tuya T5E, Espressif ESP32S3 and PY32 - Nablai ships three AI toy module families: TY, LX and NT. Modules are not all we do. The company runs a module + app two-track model: the LX Series comes with the full Nablai app, WeChat Mini Program and AMS vendor management platform, so a toy factory receives a complete hardware + software + operations package rather than a bare module on its own.

Pet-ification is the easiest direction in AI toys to do badly. The emotion system and growth system we built rest on three engineering trade-offs, and we are writing them down as a reference for teams building companion toys. We would like to see more toy factories take this line seriously instead of stopping at a loop of preset expressions. Below we lay those trade-offs out in full, as a checklist that teams working on companion toys can measure themselves against, and hopefully skip a few of the detours we took.

Plenty of products that call themselves "emotion toys" just cycle through a few preset expressions, and children see through that quickly. The emotion system we built is a closed loop that runs from semantic understanding to emotion tagging to a response strategy: the toy first works out what the child is saying and reads the emotional leaning, then decides whether to soothe, encourage or simply play along, rather than mechanically swapping one face for another. Guangdong Province's recently issued Action Plan for Accelerating AI Adoption in the Toy Industry (2025-2027) also lists "emotional companionship" and "bionic pets" as priority directions, which suggests this path has both demand and policy support behind it.

Three engineering trade-offs, taken one at a time

(Trade-off 1) On-device or cloud. Basic interactions that need real-time wake and offline availability go into the on-device SDK; emotion recognition and the conversation LLM sit behind a cloud API. Both TY002 and LX002 use this dual-stack design. (Trade-off 2) Where the memory of growth stops. Companionship support only, no psychological diagnosis. On the LX Series, 100% of the data belongs to the brand owner, and parents can manage it in the Nablai app. (Trade-off 3) Plush or robot. Choose plush with an expression screen if you want warmth, and a mini robot if you want surprise. Both routes run the emotion system and the growth system; the difference is form factor. All three trade-offs point to the same sentence: treat the toy as a companion, not as an assessment tool.

Whichever product route you take, the architectural floor is the same. TY002 and LX002 both run a local SDK + cloud API dual-stack architecture: the local side handles device logic and real-time interaction (wake word, working offline), while the cloud provides AI conversation, multilingual support and OTA updates. The difference between them is ecosystem affiliation and brand ownership - TY works out of the box on the Tuya platform, while LX runs on Espressif ESP32S3 and supports the brand's own systems. NanoToy (PY32) is the pure UART command module: no AI, no cloud, no SDK, built for cost-sensitive volume. We hold to the dual stack because toy scenarios need both immediate response and continuous improvement: local keeps the conversation going even when the network drops, and the cloud keeps capability and content updating month by month.

We have built three product families:

  • TY Series: built on Tuya T5E, with 60+ languages, 7+ Region global data centers and overseas pre-compliance (GDPR/COPPA/CCPA); a product in three months, the fast lane into global markets
  • LX Series: built on Espressif ESP32S3, with a fully customizable independent account system, AMS vendor management platform and Nablai app, and complete brand ownership
  • NT Series: built on PY32, a low-cost way to test the smart toy market

Which one you pick depends on whether you want to go overseas quickly, own the brand, or test the water cheaply. The three routes are not mutually exclusive - many customers lead with TY and use LX for the long-term brand.

How we put an emotion system inside a toy

An emotion system is not an SDK you hand over and walk away from. We offer split and all-in-one structures, screens in 0.85C / 0.91Y / 1.28Y options, and emotion and growth capabilities configured through the Nablai app. The toy factory focuses on the form and the IP; we carry the interaction and growth logic. That is the value of the "module + app" dual track: hardware, AI, cloud and compliance arrive as one plug-and-play package, so the customer does not have to build an AI team.

FAQ

Q: Will the emotion system label my child? A: No. Our design principle is "suggest, do not diagnose; assist, do not replace". The toy supports companionship and emotional soothing; it does not replace parents and it does not make psychological diagnoses. Recognition results are used to improve the interaction, and we make no medical or psychological assessment claims.

Q: Where is the growth memory stored? A: On the LX Series, interaction data lives in the brand owner's own account system. 100% of the data belongs to the brand owner, and parents can view and manage it in the Nablai app. We do not share data without authorization.

Q: Which of TY / LX / NT suits pet-ification? A: For brand sovereignty and growth memory, choose the LX Series (Espressif ESP32S3, standalone account system plus the Nablai app). To sell companion toys overseas quickly, choose the TY Series (Tuya T5E, 60+ languages). To test the water cheaply, choose the NT Series (PY32).

Q: Does a pet-ified toy count as a medical product? A: No. We make no claim of treatment or medical use. The positioning is companionship, emotional support and entertainment, which puts it squarely in the smart toy category. We have worked across plush toys, IP character figures, educational hardware and other categories, and we hold that line in every one of them.
